Getting Personal...

I've been fighting quite a nasty cough over the past month...

Just completed the last of a round of antibiotics, prednizone and occasional uses of an inhaler to get over a pretty bad cough/respiratory infection that my daughter and I have been fighting since late July after (presumably the cause) plugging in an Air Conditioner that had been stored for months in the basement and not yet cleaned, but was still turned to "on". I immediately got a face full of dust and have been coughing since.

Between always vigilantly avoiding triggers for cluster and migraine headaches and this, the past month has been a chore to do much more than my day to day work at Boyds (my day job, which I rarely talk about).

The last bad day I had was Saturday, when I was cold to the world for 15 hours.

---

I've just bought a "Democratic Blue" 2006 Chevy Cobalt and traded in my trademark bumperstickered "purple" (Maroon) 1998 Chevy Astro van.

Here's a few reasons why I did it:
- I don't really need a van like I did when I had one-year-old twins on apnea monitors, but six-year-old twins almost out of booster seats
- $$$ The van had inspection in a few months, and it was taking more and more to pass each year.
- $$$ The first payment is in Mid-October and with the trade-in I needed nothing down - No van payment in September.
- $$$ Less money on gas. The payments are more, BUT at 1000 miles per month, with the van at 15 MPG, if the car gets 27MPG and gas is $3/gal., the cost evens out and the environment is better off to boot.

I remember the cars my parents had (a Rambler, a Station Wagon) when I was my kids' age, so even though they think I am weird for doing so, I made sure to take pictures of my girls in and by the van before taking it in when we picked up the Cobalt Monday.

I'm still young enough to appreciate that it has a spoiler, I guess, although I'm old enough to choke on the fact that a stupid wing costs an extra $200 - and on a 4-door? it's like supercharging a yugo. Although I am a fan of The Fast and the Furious/2f2f and games like Grand Turismo, these cars are still economy looking, but at least I get to imagine on http://www.cobaltracing.com/ ...

---

The girls started first grade Tuesday, and getting used to the new CTE schedule is interesting. I don't know whether I like it or not. Doesn't bother me too much.

JOE OTTERBEIN JR LAUNCHES UNUSUAL BID FOR US HOUSE

I met Joe at the recent Democratic Club Picnic Club this past Saturday. I circulated for him in 2002, but we had started a few weeks and were a couple hundred signatures short of the 1,000 needed.

Now he's calling for more people to run with him!

JOE OTTERBEIN JR LAUNCHES UNUSUAL BID FOR US HOUSE
Shrewsbury Democrat Calls for More Democrats to Compete for Nomination

(York, Pennsylvania) Today Shrewsbury resident Joe
Otterbein announced his candidacy for the Democratic
nomination to challenge Representative Todd Platts.
Instead of hoping to keep other candidates out of what
many consider a long-shot attempt to defeat the three
term incumbent, Otterbein is asking other Democrats to
challenge him.

Otterbein told supporters at the York County Judicial
Center that, "Politics should be about people getting
together and solving problems. As competitors we can
work together to find solutions to the real problems
in our communities. Rather than bluster and preaching
to the choir, we Democrats need to get off our stumps
and into our communities to work side by side with our
neighbors. We need to earn their trust with our
sweat."

For nearly 50 years, Joe Otterbein Jr. has worked in
his family’s bakery, as a caterer for hospitals and
hotels, and most recently as the food services
director of a large meals-on-wheels program. "After
high school I went to work at my dad and granddad's
bakery. I didn't have the chance to go to college. I
learned that if something needs to get done, you do
it. Arguing and finger-pointing just meant that the
bread didn't get made and our customers went somewhere
else, and that wasn't an option."

Otterbein is supported in his efforts by a
Philadelphia-based political action committee,
GoodWorks-PAC.org, founded by Eric Loeb.
"GoodWorks-PAC.org helps competing Democratic
candidates work together on public service events,"
said Loeb. "Public service is important for campaigns
because it brings politics back to fundamentals.
Politics started when people worked together to
address their community needs. Now our national
politics are about consultants and ads and
who-you-know, not what you can do. If more
politicians put their muscle where there mouth is,
maybe the voters would not be so cynical and we’d
elect better people."

"Politicians should stop worrying about their next ad
campaign and instead just roll up their sleeves and
get their hands dirty. As a voter you can learn a lot
more about a person when you have to rely on them to
help you hang a sheet of dry-wall or prep a picket
fence for painting than you can from any 30 second
ad," said Otterbein. "Competition forces candidates
to work harder and produce results, and that’s good
for everybody. The best person for the job will be
clear enough when we are knee deep in muck cleaning a
river or side by side packing cookies for our troops.
By bringing Democratic voters and candidates together
we can again make politics what it should be – people
working together to solve problems."

Otterbein is married to Stacey Otterbein, and has four
children, Angela, Holly, Joey, and Kimberley.

Loeb created an online Presidential campaign for
Clinton/Gore in 1992 while a doctoral student at MIT.
He has since advised numerous campaigns, including
serving as the chief software engineer for Al Gore's
presidential campaign in 2000, and as chief Internet
architect for the Democratic National Committee.

Outage leaves thousands in the dark

Evening Sun Online - FRONT PAGE NEWS: "Outage leaves thousands in the dark"

Where we you when the lights went out?

Power in McSherrystown was out from about 1:30 until about 3:45.

All street lights were out, as were both local traffic lights. Neither light had backup power to "blink".

Power was out along Eisenhower Avenue as well.

Met-Ed automated outage service had quoted 7:45AM as the time when power would be restored when I called in the outage on my cell phone at about 1:45AM. I received an automated phone call confirming the power was back on just before 4AM.

Wireless AMBER Alerts System - AMBER Alerts for your ZIP Code to your Cell Phone

Wireless AMBER Alerts System - AMBER Alerts for your ZIP Code to your Cell Phone

Help find missing children in our area when it matters most - in those first few hours.

You will receive a AMBER Alert message when a child goes missing in the ZIP codes you designate. According to T-Mobile (my carrier, used as an example) - "You won't be charged for receiving an alert, and you just may be the one to save a child's life."

Looking through the history of Wireless alerts sent for PA, it appears they've only sent one so far, in the Philadelphia area. They appear to be intelligently targeted into a focused area, so that if you get an alert, you should know to take notice.

My last meeting as President of the Young Democrats of Adams County

Young Democrats of Adams County - YoungAdamsDemocrats.com

I am resigning as President of the Young Democrats of Adams County at Thusday's Meeting. I've served as Preisdent since we founded the organization in February, 2003.

Next Meeting:
August 18, 6:00PM

Ragged Edge Coffee House (http://www.raggededgecoffeehs.com ), 110 Chambersburg St., Gettysburg, PA

Salon.com - War Room

Salon.com - War Room: "War Room
It gets ugly in Crawford
We thought the blowback against Cindy Sheehan hit rock bottom when Bill O'Reilly suggested that her vigil in Crawford, Texas, 'borders on treasonous' and Michelle Malkin offered up the view that Sheehan's dead son wouldn't approve. Then we thought it couldn't get any worse when the president of the United States said he couldn't take the time to meet with Sheehan because his exercise schedule was more important.
We were wrong. On Monday night, a driver in a pickup truck rammed through rows of white crosses Sheehan and her supporters have placed across a road near the president's Crawford ranch. So much for supporting the troops: The crosses bore the names of soldiers who were killed in the war in Iraq. "

Special Meeting of Borough Council Wednesday

There will be a special meeting of Borough Council Wednesday to discuss the ongoing matter of the 2nd Street sidewalk project at 7:00PM at 338 Main Street, McSherrystown, PA (regular scheduled council meeting follows at 7:30PM).

Other matters on road conditions may also be brought up at this meeting, however the focus is on the project last year where PennDOT and it's contractors, in the opinion of council and residents, failed to install sidewalks to the Borough Code, which had been provided to PennDOT in the contract.

PennDOT has admitted an error in not passing on the Code to the contractor, and the contractor has admitted not following PennDOT's own soecifications for installing sidewalks, that expansion joints (the sidewalk lines that allow for expansion of the sidewalk with weather) were not installed according to Borough Code nor PennDOT specifications. The Borough has also pointed out that the sidewalks have a finish rougher than the Borough Code allows, and that one property in particular has sidewalk that was allowed to be rained on during installation. PennDOT disputes that the finish is unacceptable, saying that other sidewalks recently installed are of similar texture.

The Borough has previously demanded comlete replacement of the faulty sidewalks at no cost, to which PennDOT at a meeting on the 2nd has cited as economic waste. PennDOT has proposed cutting expansion joints into the sidewalk and using a substance used with bridges to remedy the expansion join faults. PennDOT is open to replacing the rained on sidewalk, if faulty, and proposes no remedy to the rough surface. PennDOT is open to proposals on what would be an appropriate deal on the final bill.

This meeting is to gather the public's opinion about this situation.

GOODWORKS-PAC.ORG ANNOUNCES A NEW MODEL FOR ALL DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGNS | GoodWorks-PAC.org

GOODWORKS-PAC.ORG ANNOUNCES A NEW MODEL FOR ALL DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGNS GoodWorks-PAC.org:

"GOODWORKS-PAC.ORG ANNOUNCES A NEW MODEL FOR ALL DEMOCRATIC CAMPAIGNS
For Immediate Release

(Philadelphia, PA) GoodWorks-PAC.org, a Federal political action committee based in Pennsylvania, has endorsed the campaign of New York City Council candidate Gur Tsabar as a model for all Democratic campaigns. GoodWorks-PAC.org recruits and assists Democratic candidates who use public service in their campaigns. These campaigns highlight Democratic values, earn positive media, and strengthen the Democratic Party's ability to turn out voters.
Gur Tsabar, a Democratic candidate for City Council in New York's 2nd District, has achieved stunning success by organizing his campaign activities around important community service events. To date, Gur's campaign has built a 500-book library for an elementary school in the East Village, handed out tax assistance coupons for low-income families, orchestrated a rock concert to benefit tenants at risk of losing their affordable housing, distributed emergency cell phones to seniors, conducted a clothing drive for victims of domestic violence in New York City shelters, organized a massive district-wide voter registration drive, produced a small business resource guide to help local entrepreneurs, and most recently he planned a food drive for hungry families in the New York City.

'Gur Tsabar has been using public service in his campaign for many months now, and it has been extremely effective for him,' said GoodWorks-PAC.org founder, Eric Loeb. 'He has helped his constituents and been a more successful campaigner as a result. We want to highlight his campaign, endorse his candidacy, and continue to learn from his outstanding example."
"I am running for office to help people," said Tsabar. "I can think of no better way to focus campaign energy then on putting much needed resources back into the community - where they belong. My campaign reflects the values I will bring to the City Council."

About New York City Council candidate, Gur Tsabar
Mr. Tsabar is a four-year veteran of New York’s City Hall, the son of immigrants, a New York marathon runner, a current advisor to New York City Council Speaker Gifford Miller, an involved community leader, a Finance graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, and a man with a mission. Gur Tsabar wants to make government more understandable and approachable: a friendlier place, where information, assistance and support flow freely.

About GoodWorks-PAC.org founder Eric Loeb
Dr. Loeb founded the historic collaboration between the Clinton White House and the MIT Artificial Intelligence lab. He has since led the way in applying new technologies to political campaigns. Loeb was the lead software engineer for Vice President Gore’s Presidential campaign, and the chief internet architect for the Democratic National Committee through 2003, where he was a key advocate for the party’s switch to open source software, and its principal analyst of online fundraising.

Pay-raise Pile-on

Did I mention our State Rep voted for this pay raise? (After giving money back to the state for fiscal responsibiltity, and then using our judicial officials as excuses and blaming it on Philadelphia based economics - while not saying whether he'd forgo the money - see Colgan's blog below..)

It could be noted that Rep. Nickol voted against the pay raise, refused it since, and has even proposed reducing the size of the state legislature - all things our bloated state budget could use, and I support.

In the evening Sun, he said "I don't think I should be paid any less than my colleagues. I work just as hard as they do."

and of course the candidate I support, who is opposing Rep. Maitland, Alan Henry has also been on about this..

Have I ever mentioned I'm taking a 25% pay cut by going to Mayor?

It's even been noticed by some other local area bloggers:
Daniel P. Colgan, McSherrystown (who has taken me to task as well about money and raising taxes - but I'm working on avoiding it!)
Don Palesky, Mt. Joy

There's even an organized effort to replace the entire house and senate because of this:
