"The Freethought Equality Fund is pleased to endorse the campaign of Herb Riede for the City Council of Meadville, Pennsylvania," announced an email sent to FEF supporters on Thursday.
The Freethought Equality Fund seeks to increase the number of open humanist, agnostic, atheist and secular religious people in elected office. Affiliated with the Center for Freethought Equality, the advocacy and political arm of the American Humanist Association, they support candidates who share the goals of protecting the separation of church and state and defending the civil liberties of secular Americans.
"I am an atheist, secular humanist, and to be specific, I prefer the idealism of Gene Roddenberry," said Herb Riede. Gene Roddenberry was the creator of the Star Trek series, which inspired Herb as a teen to community service. "I joined a Trekker group that had chapters in Meadville and Warren that adopted highways, collected supplies for Hurricane ravaged areas and helps Toys for Tots - and yes, I attended a Star Trek convention."
"I appreciate and welcome the support of the Freethought Equality Fund and believe we can do great things together."
